DOUGAL McINTOSH

<<Back to NZFFA member nominees

I have been developing 1100ha hill country NW of Wanganui for 50 years, began planting radiata in 1974, through to 1985, and used this 100ha to form a joint venture in 1990.

Two other joint ventures formed in 2000, a third in 2007. Present area in forest 600ha; predominantly Radiata , with significant areas of Redwood, Douglas Fir, Cupressus, Eucalyptus, and 1-2ha stands of Oak, Black Walnut, Acacia, Deodar and Hinoki Cypress.

I am a member of the Farm Forestry Association, was chairman of Middle Districts which negotiated with MAF to rehabilitate forests damaged in ’04 storm.

Awarded Husqvarna North Island Farm Forester of the Year 2002.

I am:

  • A trustee of the Neil Barr Forestry Foundation
  • Member of Horizons Regional Council SLUI, “Sustainable Land Use Initiative”

I was:

  • A member of Canterbury University SLMACC, “Sustainable Land Management Adjusting For Climate Change”
  • A trustee of the Anglican Schools Forestry Trust in the Wairarapa
  • A director of NDG Pine, which relocated a Californian sawmill to Wanganui

And been a member of:

  • NZ Farm Environment Trust
  • Agricultural Pest Destruction Council
  • Whanganui Collegiate School Board of Trustees
  • Hospice Wanganui

I am concerned at the lack of involvement of small forest owners in National forest affairs and decisions.

I am concerned at the lack of NZ research into alternative species. As Scion no longer takes part in this research, foresters considering alternative species are not receiving sound advice for making silviculture decisions.

I hope the Forest Growers Levy Trust will be able to address these concerns.

Voting closes at 5.00pm on 22 November 2013
