Herstal Ullricht, Rock Farm, Cave, South Canterbury branch
Herstal Ullricht describes how trees work for him on his two drystock farms in a very low rainfall zone. Around 10% of the farm is in forestry; shelter and shade are also highly valued as is farm income diversification. Trees have been planted for gorse control or to take difficult sites out of production. Shelter species - Leyland cypress and cedrus deodara, eucalypts and poplar. Recently harvested trees paid for a new irrigation pond.
