Eoin Garden, Avenel Station, Central Otago branch
The Garden family farm this 2000 hectare hill to high country station, producing sheep, beef, and venison. Some 200 ha is now planted as shelterbelts and woodlots with shelter a primary objective throughout. Shelter is valued both for livestock and pasture. Young deer are wintered within woodlots which provide an ideal environment. Forestry has provided an good way to plan for family succession and additional land has been purchased for family forestry ventures. Douglas fir and radiata pine are key species.
