Dairy, sheep and deer farmers talk about the benefits of shade and shelter for stock. Most animals have trouble if they overheat, and seek shade in summer. In winter they will seek shelter from the chill factor of icy winds. Well designed shelter belts that cut the wind, or forestry blocks that offer winter shelter amongst trees, protect the stock and reduce losses in calving and lambing. For east-west shelter belts, well branched deciduous trees can give summer shade and winter shelter, while letting the sun though on to the pasture. For north-south shelter belts, pines and Eucalypts work well. Underplanting helps cut the wind at ground level.
