PESTS AND DISEASES OF FORESTRY IN NEW ZEALAND

Cyclaneusma minus, needle cast

Scion is the leading provider of forest-related knowledge in New Zealand
Formerly known as the Forest Research Institute, Scion has been a leader in research relating to forest health for over 50 years. The Rotorua-based Crown Research Institute continues to provide science that will protect all forests from damage caused by insect pests, pathogens and weeds. The information presented below arises from these research activities.

From Forest health News 82, February 1999.

There is a follow-on problem with Cyclaneusma minus . This needle-cast disease caused significant crown loss to areas of radiata pine in northern forests late last year. In fact a stand of trees either side of SH 1 south of Whangarei looked as though a fire had gone through it. Where there is roughly more than 70% crown loss, the wound pathogen Sphaeropsis sapinea, (Diplodia pinea) has caused many tops to die.
