The information presented below arises from these research activities.
From Forest Health News No.43, June 1995.
An update of the pitch canker infection of Douglas fir (refer FHNews 37, December 1994) was received from California in early June. Only three infected Douglas firs have been found and these are all outside its natural range. The boundaries of Pinus radiata infection in California have been extended and there is some limited overlap between the native range of Douglas fir and infected P.radiata in Mendocino county. The disease has not however spread to Douglas fir in these locations. The records on Douglas fir are regarded as somewhat of an oddity but there still remains the potential for non-diseased Douglas fir seed or plant material to carry inoculum if it is collected from trees in close proximity to an infection source.
