Status report: Essigella californica (Monterey pine aphid)

On the 18 February 1998, an aphid was intercepted by Australian quarantine inspectors on a consignment of New Zealand avocados imported into Sydney. The aphid was confirmed as Essigella californica (Monterey pine aphid) on 20 March. Essigella species have not previously been recorded in New Zealand or Australia. On confirmation of the interception and subsequent identification a format request was made by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) to the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQ1S) to provide further details on the infested consignment.
