We recently heard from Martin McKenzie (ex Forest Health and now USDA Forest Service) that Hylurgus ligniperda (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) is now established in North America. It was found not far from the shores of Lake Ontario, near Rochester, New York. H. ligniperda is a European bark beetle that was first found in New Zealand in 1974. It was one of the insects found in some early shipments of New Zealand radiata logs to the western United States and was viewed with some concern by quarantine authorities there. The main concern was that it would be an important vector of Leptographium. It will be interesting to see how quickly it spreads in North America and whether it does vector Leptographium root disease. I daresay Martin will keep us posted as he always has had an interest in Hylurgus. All indications are that the source of this introduction was infested dunnage and packing material from Europe.
