On a recent visit to tree nurseries in Auckland and Whangarei some interesting observations were made. Ophelimus has now spread to most areas of the North Island. The process of colonisation reported from all the infested sites was a primary colonisation of Eucalyptus botryoides and secondary colonisation of E. saligna . This confirms our belief that E. botryoides is the main host for Ophelimus.
Some of the nursery stock was very badly affected. To an extent, in some cases, where they should not be sold on for planting. Other nurseries had taken prophylactic measures and the trees were in very good condition with E. saligna showing no signs of infection after regular treatments with a synthetic pyrethroid.
